BEAST WARS DINOBOT

This figure is from 1996.
Dinobot was a Predicon who was on Megatrons team that stole the golden disk on Cybertron. This is when they crashed on Prehistoric earth . They were actually trying to go to modern day earth but went through a worm hole and ended up millions of years in the past.
Dinobot thought they had been lead to the wrong planet. He wanted to overthrow Megatron and become the leader of the Predicons. He challenged him to a battle. Megatron refused and got Scorpinok to blast him. With the power of the blast he flew quite a distance.
As the Maximals were coming back to the Exilon after their first battle with the Predicons, Dinobot was waiting for them. He challenged Optimus Primal to one on one combat to take them over as he just wanted to be leader and was willing to change sides. Optimus won narrowly and Dinobot was confused as Optimus refused to kill him. The Predicons turned up and they fought  and Optimus and Dionobot were left dangling from a bridge. Dinobot was suffering Energon overload as he had stayed as a robot too long. He could not transform so he was in danger. Optimus wanted to save him which he did. He stayed with the Maximals but not as a leader. At first he was not trusted but when he saved Optimus's life they welcomed him all except Rattrap who never trusted him.
Dinobt was a warrior with the Maximals and respected Optimus Primal. But when Optimus was in danger or out of the scene he tried to take over. This continued all the way to series two and the golden disc story. A second golden disc was found on earth which Dinobot stole he discovered that they could tell the future. Dinobot was slippery and did go back briefly to the Predicons. He was always in it for himself. and his own power.
Dinobot gave one of the golden discs to the Maximals Rinox and the other to Megatron. Rattrap stumbled come across Megatron and Dinobot during the exchange. He was caught and Megatron challenged Dinobot to kill Rattrap as a sign of loyalty. He could not do it.
He confessed all to Optimus Primal and was sorry he had given the disc to Megatron. The maximals did not really trust him from then even though he became a loyal Maximal.
In "Code of Hero" episode. Megatron worked out what the disc did. He saw an image if a mountain. he got Rampage to blow it up and the image changed. The Predacons went to Rift Valley as he wanted to kill all the early humans. The humans were helping the Autobots and he did not want this to continue so he wanted to stop it in the past so they would win and it would help the Predecons and Decepticons. Dinobot saw what was going on and called for help but he knew they would not arrive in time so he went on his own to defend the humans. He won even though he was badly damaged. He saved the early humans. Dinobot was very badly damaged and was going to go into  status lock but over rid it to keep on fighting even though he had no weapons at all. He defeated Megatron with a stone and a stick knocking him down and used his remaining energy to destroy the disc. Megatron ran away as the other Maximals arrived. Dino bot died. He was a hero.

BIO; As if torn from from the pages of Earth's prehistoric past, a vicious velociraptor breaths again! But Dinobot is no ordinary 'raptor, he's a robot in disguise battling beside his heroic team- mates, the Maximals! Armed with a spinning cyber-slash tail weapon and always hungry for battle, Optimus Primal considers him a natural combat expert who has clawed his way to the top one victory after another!

Beast mode front

Robot mode

Robot mode with mutant head

His beast mode is good apart from the most obvious flaw that the chest and underbelly is the robot legs folded up. The front view of the beast barely hides the robot head.
His legs on his underbelly are amber plastic which does not look good.
His tail can just spin as it is hard to get it lined up when transforming him.
His mouth opens and he has good articulation for an early beast wars figure.
He has some nice detail on the skin and eyes.
A flap can pop up on his neck which is annoying.
His beast mode is OK but he is an older figure so for the time when he came out he is OK and looks good on display.

His robot mode compared to the cartoon is not great. It does not look like dinobot.
His face is odd without a mouth and he has yellow eyes. But I suppose this was made before the cartoon.
The mutant head was never used in the cartoon but I don't see the point. I think it is supposed to look like a dinosaur skull?
I fold the arms back so I can put the mutant head back out of site otherwise it looks odd on display hanging down
His hands are unfortunately upside down. A wrist joint would have fixed this  but it would then have made it look weird. I think you have to put up with this.

He has his drill sword made from the tail. You can keep it in the tail. This showed up in the cartoon once. You press the button and it spins. It is bent to match curve of the tail. In the cartoon it is straight,
The amber legs still look odd.

He does not have the signature claws or feathers but this was before they discovered they had feathers!

Overall is is not a great figure but you have to have Dinobot just to say you have him. Try to pick him up cheap. I got him for £17.00. I think £15.00 would have been better

The articulation is alright but the shoulder joints are tight and tricky to move.

Others include. Fox kids repaint later on in the toy line. This was weird and red. He also had a tenth anniversary re paint which was a bit more cartoon accurate. In remoulding there was a Grimlock figure a year after the original. Tekara made him into another dinosaur called Hardhead. Hasbro also released him as Dinotron instead of Hardhead

They also brought out a classics version in the Universe 2.0 line which looks pretty good. It seems to have similar problems to this figure.

I recommend him and I like him faults and all.
